Learning about rocks

Last Thursday we learnt all about how rocks are formed. Mrs G used sweets to help us understand. First we looked at a model of the Earth that Mrs G had made from play dough – it didn’t quite go to plan and the Earth was very squidgy but when we cut it in half we could see all the layers inside. We learnt that inside the earth is molten (liquid) rock and that the crust is made of rock.

After that Mrs G showed us how the different rocks were formed. Igneous rock is molten rock that has been cooled – we poured melted chocolate onto ice cream to demonstrate this process (then we ate the evidence!).  Sedimentary rock is made of small particles which are pressed together over a VERY long time – sometimes you can find fossils in sedimentary rock. Mrs G used Rice Krispies, smarties, sprinkles and a jelly snake (fossil) to demonstrate.  Finally we learnt that metamorphic rock is rock that has been changed by heat or pressure. Mrs G microwaved some ‘rocks’ then squashed them with her muscles. I wonder if the children can remember how the different rocks were formed?
